This is the 2nd version of the CtD Bowling Ball Surface Scanner. This scanner measures the widest range of grits available on the market at a fraction of the cost. It's quick and convenient to use even during competition.

This device measures the actual surface grit on your bowling ball. This product displays the grit of the ball in 0.5 sec with the click of a button. It also shows up to the three latest scans.  This device is great to measure the rate of surface change which is partially responsible for "lane transition".

Very good tool, with a few small drawbacks...

I have been using this surface scanner a couple times per week since I received it. It seems to scan accurately (meaning the readings seem to make sense), and comes with a calibration plate that must be used periodically. With my user experience, there are 3 issues I've found so far:

1) The cost is prohibitive; many bowlers wouldn't consider spending close to $600 including tax for a tool like this.

2) CTD recommends recalibrating the scanner approximately every 100 scans. Unfortunately, the ball plate must be unscrewed and removed every time recalibration is needed. It's a shame that the design of the scanner didn't include calibration without disassembly.

3) CTD includes a nice padded case for the surface scanner, but it was poorly designed. To store the scanner in the case, you must remove the ball plate, and attach the calibration plate, which is a real drag. The scanner cannot be stored in the case with the ball plate attached to the scanner. I recommend buying a small padded camera case that is big enough to store scanner with the ball plate attached.

This is the best thing for making sure the surface is correct sometimes when you think it's correct it's not always what you think it is this thing is awesome I love it

Works as advertised. I have resurfaced 2 balls and their performance has improved. It reads pretty close to the surface pad being used. Any deviation is due to lack of experience in resurfacing bowling balls. One ball scanned at exactly at 6000, it came out right where I wanted it. It is a necessary tool for serious ball maintenance.

Love it. I doscovered that I was pressing too hard while resurfacing so I am trying to be more conscientious of the evenness. Will try to take note how long the surface holds up over the course of frames.

Now with the scanner we see just how quickly sanding pad degrade. Whether you use pad dry, wet or conditioner by hand or spinner the pads degrade from the minute you use the pads on your first ball resurfacing. Based on my minimal testing, the best reliable results were obtained using pad dry and by hand. Finally I detracted 1 star due to the fact that the mounting screws are susceptible to falling out if you unscrew them too far......AND CTD DOES NOT OFFER REPLACEMENT PARTS!
